Lid Tear

A cut on the eye lid due to trauma is referred to as a lid tear or eyelid laceration. This may be the result of trauma from a motor vehicle accident or an accident at home or work. The severity of a lid tear is assessed by taking into account factors such as the mode of injury; whether the injury was caused due to an animal bite, from a sharp or blunt object, or due to heat or chemicals.

The ophthalmologist will check the extent of the tear and determine if it has penetrated the eye ball to decide upon the treatment. Treatment strategy is centered on reestablishing the anatomical configuration without loss in the physiological functions, along with improving the damaged cosmetic appearance.

Most lid lacerations can be treated under local anesthesia with sutures.  Severe lacerations will require surgery to repair.
